Accommodation
This is a true hut-to-hut hiking experience, with six nights in a combination of mountain refuges and hotels along the route.
Mountain refuges are comfortable but simple. Depending on the location and availability, accommodation may be in private rooms or shared dormitory-style rooms, with shared bathroom facilities on some nights. Hot showers may occasionally require an additional payment.
Refuge availability is limited during the summer months, so the exact accommodations may vary while maintaining the overall itinerary.
Meals
Breakfast and dinner are included during your trip.
Lunches, trail snacks and drinks are not included. On most hiking days, you'll have opportunities to purchase lunch or a packed lunch from mountain refuges. We recommend carrying water and snacks each day.
Mountain refuge dinners are typically hearty set meals designed for hikers rather than extensive restaurant menus. Please let us know about dietary restrictions when booking so we can communicate them to your accommodations.
Luggage & What You'll Carry
This itinerary is designed as a traditional hut-to-hut trek, so luggage transportation is not included in the standard trip.
You'll carry the clothing and personal items you need between accommodations in your hiking backpack. Pack light and bring only what you'll need for the week.
Optional luggage transportation can be arranged for an additional charge if you prefer to hike with a lighter daypack.
Self-Guided Navigation
This is a self-guided trip, giving you the freedom to hike at your own pace rather than following a group schedule.
Before departure, you'll receive detailed route information and access to GPS navigation through our travel app. Several days also include alternative routes, allowing you to select the option that best matches your ability, weather conditions and comfort with mountain terrain.
You'll also have access to local support if you need assistance during your trip.
Hiking Difficulty
This trip is rated Moderate and is best suited to travelers with good fitness and previous hiking experience.
Expect approximately 3–7 hours of hiking per day, with sustained climbs and descents. Some days involve roughly 3,000 feet or more of elevation gain or loss.
Trails include forest paths, alpine meadows, rocky mountain terrain and high passes. Certain route options include short exposed or cable-assisted sections, but the standard itinerary does not require technical climbing or via ferrata equipment.
Route Options
One of the advantages of this itinerary is the ability to adjust several hiking days.
Depending on the day, you may have a choice between a shorter route and a longer or more challenging alternative. Some options use local buses or cable cars to reduce hiking distance and elevation.
Your route information will explain the alternatives so you can make an informed decision based on conditions and how you're feeling that day.
Getting There & Away
The trip begins and ends at Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) in the Italian Dolomites.
Most international travelers reach the region through Venice, followed by train and bus connections into the Dolomites. Innsbruck and other northern Italian airports may also work depending on your broader travel plans.
Transportation to Lago di Braies at the beginning of the trip and onward transportation after the trek are not included.
Departure Dates
This self-guided trip offers flexible departures from June 15 through September 15, 2027, subject to accommodation availability.
A minimum of two travelers is required.
Because mountain refuges have limited capacity—particularly during July and August—we recommend booking early if you have specific travel dates.
Weather & Trail Conditions
Weather in the Dolomites can change quickly, even during summer. Warm and sunny conditions can be followed by rain, thunderstorms or significantly cooler temperatures at higher elevations.
Snow can remain on higher trails early in the season, and early snowfall is possible toward the end of the season.
Come prepared with layers, waterproof hiking gear and appropriate footwear, and be willing to adjust your route when mountain conditions require it.
Important Saturday Accommodation Note
If your itinerary places Day 6 on a Saturday, an alternative overnight arrangement may be necessary because of refuge availability around Prato Piazza.
In this situation, accommodation may be arranged at a hotel in the Ponticello/Brückele area, potentially requiring a short public transportation connection and an additional supplement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a true hut-to-hut trek?
Yes. After your first night at Lago di Braies, you'll hike from one mountain accommodation to the next, staying primarily in traditional Dolomites mountain refuges. You return to Lago di Braies on the final hiking day.
How difficult is this Dolomites hut-to-hut trek?
This trip is rated Moderate and is best for travelers with good fitness and previous hiking experience. Hiking days generally range from approximately 3–7 hours, with sustained climbs and descents. Some days involve around 3,000 feet or more of elevation gain or loss.
Do I need previous hut-to-hut hiking experience?
No, but previous experience with full-day mountain hikes is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable hiking consecutive days on rocky and uneven terrain and managing significant elevation changes.
Do I need via ferrata or climbing experience?
No. The standard itinerary does not require technical climbing or via ferrata equipment. Some optional route variations include short exposed or cable-assisted sections, which can be avoided by choosing the alternative route.
Do I have to carry my luggage?
The standard trip does not include luggage transportation, so you'll normally carry the clothing and personal belongings you need between accommodations.
Optional luggage transportation can be arranged for an additional charge if you'd prefer to hike with a lighter daypack.
What are the mountain refuges like?
Dolomites mountain refuges offer simple accommodation in spectacular mountain locations. Depending on the refuge and availability, you may stay in a private room or shared dormitory-style accommodation. Bathrooms may be shared, and some refuges charge separately for showers.
Are breakfast and dinner included?
Yes. Breakfast and dinner are included. Lunches, trail snacks and drinks are not included. Lunch or packed lunches can generally be purchased from mountain refuges along the route.
How do I navigate on a self-guided trip?
You'll receive detailed trip information and GPS navigation through our travel app. You'll hike independently rather than with a guide, giving you the flexibility to move at your own pace.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Mountain weather can change quickly in the Dolomites. Your route information includes alternatives on several days, and you should always choose your route based on current weather and trail conditions. Local transportation can also help shorten certain stages when necessary.
Can I choose between easier and harder hiking routes?
Yes. Several days offer different route options. Depending on the stage, you may be able to choose a shorter route, take on a longer mountain crossing, or use a bus or cable car to reduce the day's hiking.
Is this the Alta Via 1?
No. This is not a complete Alta Via 1 trek. The itinerary travels through some of the same Dolomites terrain but follows its own circuit connecting Lago di Braies, the Fanes area, Cinque Torri and Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
This distinction is important because FPC also offers dedicated Alta Via 1 itineraries.
Where does the trip start and finish?
The trip begins and ends at Lago di Braies (Pragser Wildsee) in the Italian Dolomites. This makes the itinerary a circuit rather than a point-to-point trek requiring transportation back to the starting location.
What is the best time to hike from Lago di Braies to Tre Cime?
The trip operates from June 15 through September 15. Conditions vary throughout the season, with the possibility of lingering snow early in summer and colder mountain weather toward September.
Can I choose my own departure date?
Yes. This is a flexible-departure self-guided trip rather than a scheduled group departure. You can request a departure between June 15 and September 15, subject to accommodation availability.
Can I book this trip as a solo traveler?
The standard trip requires a minimum of two travelers.
How far in advance should I book?
Booking early is recommended, particularly for July and August. Mountain refuges have limited capacity, and room availability can determine whether your preferred departure date is possible.
How is this trip different from FPC's other Dolomites trips?
This trip is designed for travelers who want a self-guided hut-to-hut circuit connecting Lago di Braies and Tre Cime.
If you want to hike the classic long-distance route, consider our Alta Via 1 Self-Guided Trek. If you'd rather stay in hotels and hike with only a daypack, our Cortina & Tre Cime Lodge-Based Self-Guided Hike is the better fit.
