Alta Via 1 Guided Hut-to-Hut Hiking Tour

Hike the Alta Via 1 through the Italian Dolomites with an expert mountain guide, crossing from Cortina through Cinque Torri, Mount Pelmo and the towering Civetta massif.

7 Days / 6 Nights | Dolomites, Italy | Guided | Intermediate | Mountain Huts & Hotel

Tour Description

Hike hut to hut through the Italian Dolomites on a guided section of the Alta Via 1, traveling with an experienced mountain hiking guide from the mountains above Cortina d'Ampezzo south toward the Civetta massif.

Over five days of hiking, the landscape changes constantly. Traverse beneath the Tofane peaks, walk among the limestone towers of Cinque Torri, cross high mountain passes toward Croda da Lago, hike beneath the enormous face of Mount Pelmo, and follow a spectacular balcony trail beneath the towering walls of Civetta.

Each afternoon, the trail leads to a mountain rifugio, where you'll settle in for a hot dinner and a night surrounded by the peaks you've spent the day exploring. Five nights are spent in mountain huts, with breakfast, trail lunches and dinner included throughout the trip.

This is a small-group guided Alta Via 1 hiking tour, with an EU-certified mountain hiking guide leading the route. Group sizes are typically limited to 4–10 hikers, creating a more personal mountain experience while taking the route-finding and day-to-day logistics off your shoulders.

Your trip begins with a group meeting at Venice Airport and an included private transfer to Pocol, near Cortina d'Ampezzo. From there, luggage transportation is provided where mountain access allows, while you carry your overnight essentials into the more remote rifugi.

For hikers who want to experience the Alta Via 1 without navigating independently—and who enjoy sharing the trail with a small group—this itinerary combines some of the Dolomites' most recognizable landscapes with the knowledge and support of an experienced mountain guide.

Trip Highlights

  • Start with an included private transfer from Venice Airport, simplifying arrival logistics.
  • Travel with partial luggage transportation, carrying only your necessary overnight belongings when the more remote huts cannot be accessed by vehicle.

Is This Guided Alta Via 1 Trip Right for You?

This trip is designed for active hikers comfortable spending several consecutive days on mountain trails. Expect approximately 4–6 hours of hiking on most hiking days, with sustained climbs, rocky terrain and long descents.

The trip is rated Intermediate (Level 3/5). No technical climbing skills are required, but you should arrive with good hiking fitness and be prepared for up to approximately 850 m / 2,790 ft of ascent and 1,100 m / 3,610 ft of descent in a day.

This is also a true hut-to-hut experience. Mountain rifugi are comfortable and full of character, but they're not traditional hotels. Accommodation is generally in dormitories or shared rooms, with shared bathrooms in the huts.

A good fit if you want: a guided hiking experience, a small group, big mountain landscapes, established trails, evenings in Italian rifugi and the logistics of a multi-day trek handled for you.

It ends at Longarone train station.

How Difficult Is This Guided Alta Via 1 Tour?

This trip is rated Intermediate (Level 3/5). Hiking days generally involve approximately 4–6 hours on the trail, with daily elevation gains of roughly 400–850 m / 1,315–2,790 ft and elevation losses of 500–1,100 m / 1,640–3,610 ft.

There are no technical climbing sections, but hikers should be comfortable on mountain paths and trails, sustained ascents and long descents.

Who Leads the Trip?

The group is accompanied by a local EU-certified mountain hiking guide (English Speaking). Your guide leads the hiking route and accompanies the group throughout the mountain portion of the trip.

How Large Are the Groups?

Scheduled departures operate with 4–10 participants and are confirmed once four guests are booked. In exceptional circumstances, the group may have one additional traveler.

How Does Luggage Transportation Work?

This trip includes partial luggage transportation.

You'll have access to your main luggage on Days 1 and 2. You'll carry the belongings needed for the night on Days 3, 4 and 5 because the remote refuges cannot always be reached by vehicle. Your main luggage is delivered again to Passo Duran on Day 6.

If the backup accommodation at Staulanza is used on Day 4, luggage transportation may also be available that night.

Because you'll carry overnight belongings for several consecutive nights, the supplier recommends a 45+ liter hiking backpack. Transported luggage is limited to one piece per person weighing up to 15 kg / 33 lb.

What Are the Mountain Huts Like?

The trip includes one night in a 3-star hotel in Pocol and five nights in comfortable mountain refuges.

Mountain hut accommodation is in dormitories or shared rooms with shared bathrooms. The rifugi provide a classic part of the Dolomites hiking experience, putting the group directly in the mountains each evening.

What Meals Are Included?

The trip includes full board from dinner on Day 1 through breakfast on Day 7.

Breakfasts and dinners are served at the accommodations. During hiking days, picnic lunches are prepared by the guide and eaten along the trail.

Travelers with food allergies or special dietary requirements should provide those details when booking so accommodations can make appropriate preparations where possible.

Where Does the Guided Alta Via 1 Tour Start?

The guided trip begins at Venice Airport at 2:00 PM on Day 1. You'll meet your guide and group before taking the included private transfer to Pocol near Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Travelers arriving independently by car can instead meet the group at the Pocol hotel at 5:00 PM.

Where Does the Trip End?

The trip ends on the morning of Day 7 at Longarone train station following an included private transfer from Passo Duran.

Public transportation connections are available from Longarone toward Venice and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

What Gear Do I Need?

Bring broken-in waterproof hiking footwear, rain gear, warm insulating layers, sun protection, a headlamp and a hiking backpack large enough to carry overnight essentials.

A 45+ liter backpack is recommended because you'll carry overnight belongings during the section where luggage transportation isn't available. Trekking poles are strongly recommended, and hikers should have at least 2 liters of water capacity.

Depending on conditions, hiking crampons may be required for June or September departures when snow remains on the route.

What Happens if Weather Affects the Itinerary?

Mountain weather, trail closures, accommodation availability or other logistical issues can occasionally require route changes. Any itinerary modifications are made with traveler safety and comfort as the priority.
