Best of the Dolomites: Guided Hiking from Cortina

Five classic Dolomites hikes. One comfortable base in Cortina.

7 Days / 6 Nights | Dolomites, Italy | Guided | Easy to Moderate | Hotel Based

Spend five days hiking some of the most recognizable trails in the Italian Dolomites, while returning each evening to the same hotel in Cortina d'Ampezzo.

From Cortina, head into the mountains each morning with your guide. Walk beneath the rock towers of Cinque Torri, cross high passes above Croda da Lago, follow the Alta Via 1 beneath the massive face of the Tofane, circle the three towers of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and climb to the turquoise waters of Lake Sorapis.

The difference with this itinerary is its simplicity. You unpack once. Your luggage stays at the hotel while private transfers take you to a different trailhead each morning. You'll carry only a daypack and return to Cortina each afternoon for a hot shower, dinner and a comfortable bed.

Most hiking days cover 6–7 miles over 4–6 hours, with roughly 1,100–1,800 feet of climbing. The trails are non-technical, although you'll encounter rocky mountain terrain and some assisted sections with cables, rails and stairs on the hike to Lake Sorapis.

An EU-certified mountain hiking guide leads the group throughout the week, choosing the best route for the conditions and adjusting when mountain weather requires it.

For hikers who want to experience the Dolomites' classic trails without hut dormitories, heavy packs or changing hotels every night, this is a particularly comfortable way to spend a week in the mountains.

Trip Highlights

  • Circle the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, walking beneath the three enormous limestone towers and around their dramatic north faces.
  • Hike to Lake Sorapis, where pale turquoise water sits beneath the towering face of Monte Sorapis.
  • Walk beneath the Cinque Torri, crossing Forcella Averau before descending among the five distinctive stone towers.
  • Follow the Alta Via 1 beneath the Tofane, with the huge south face of Tofana di Rozes rising above the trail.
  • Cross the high country above Croda da Lago, linking mountain passes, alpine pasture and a quiet lake in one varied hiking day.
  • Stay all six nights in Cortina, unpacking once while private transfers connect you with a different trail each day.

Is This Dolomites Hiking Tour Right for You?

This trip is a good fit for active travelers who want five substantial days of hiking with hotel comfort each night. Most days involve 4–6 hours on the trail and approximately 6–7 miles of hiking.

You don't need climbing or mountaineering experience. The trails are primarily non-technical, but this is still mountain hiking: expect uneven and rocky terrain, sustained climbs and descents, and changing weather. The Lake Sorapis hike also includes short sections assisted by fixed cables, rails and stairs.

You'll carry only a daypack with water, layers, lunch and daily essentials. Your main luggage stays at the hotel in Cortina for the entire trip.

Because this is guided, you also don't need to worry about navigating trailheads, arranging daily transportation or deciding how weather affects the day's route. Your guide handles those decisions and can adapt the hiking plan when conditions require it.

A good fit if you want: classic Dolomites hiking, a small guided group, one comfortable hotel base, private trailhead transfers, and challenging enough days in the mountains without carrying an overnight pack.

Trip Itinerary

DAY 1 — WELCOME TO CORTINA D'AMPEZZO

Meet your group at Venice Marco Polo Airport this afternoon and travel north toward the Italian Dolomites. Over the next couple of hours, the landscape changes from the plains surrounding Venice to deep mountain valleys and the pale limestone peaks that will become your hiking playground for the week.

Arrive in Cortina d'Ampezzo, one of the best-known mountain towns in the Dolomites and your base for all six nights. Check into your hotel and unpack—you won't need to move your luggage again until it's time to leave.

This evening, meet your guide and fellow hikers for an introduction to the week ahead. You'll talk through the planned hikes, trail conditions and what to carry each day before sitting down for your first dinner together.

Tomorrow morning, you'll trade the streets of Cortina for your first high mountain pass and the rock towers of Cinque Torri.

Transfer: Approximately 2–2.5 hours
Pack: Main luggage
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Dinner

DAY 2 — HIKE BENEATH THE CINQUE TORRI

Your first full day of hiking in the Dolomites starts high in the mountains at Passo Falzarego, 2,105 m / 6,906 ft.

Climb toward Forcella Averau at 2,435 m / 7,989 ft, the highest point of the week. As you gain elevation, the views expand across the surrounding peaks before the trail begins descending toward Rifugio Averau and Rifugio Scoiattoli.

Then the Cinque Torri come into full view.

These five freestanding limestone towers rise abruptly from the mountainside, creating one of the most distinctive landscapes around Cortina. Follow the trail beneath the towers, where climbers often dot the rock walls above, before continuing downhill toward Cian Zopè.

If conditions and the group allow, there's also the option to extend the hike with the Nuvolau summit, adding another high viewpoint over the surrounding Dolomites.

Return to Cortina this afternoon with your first mountain hike complete—and your suitcase exactly where you left it.

Hiking: Approximately 4.5 hours
Distance: 6.2 mi / 10 km
Elevation Gain: +1,148 ft / +350 m
Elevation Loss: -2,346 ft / -715 m
Pack: Daypack
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

DAY 3 — HIKE FROM PASSO GIAU TO CRODA DA LAGO

Today's hike shows just how much the Dolomites can change over the course of a single trail.

Begin at Passo Giau, 2,236 m / 7,336 ft, already surrounded by high peaks. Follow the trail toward Forcella Giau at 2,360 m / 7,743 ft, where views open across the mountains to the north and south.

From the pass, continue through open alpine pasture toward Forcella Ambrizzola before beginning the long descent toward Croda da Lago.

The landscape gradually changes as you lose elevation. Exposed mountain terrain gives way to grassy slopes and then forest as you approach the lake and its mountain refuge—a completely different setting from where you started just a few hours earlier.

After time near the lake, pick up a section of the Alta Via 1 for the final descent toward Ponte de Ru Curto. A short private transfer brings you back to Cortina for another evening at your hotel.

Hiking: Approximately 5 hours
Distance: 7.2 mi / 11.5 km
Elevation Gain: +1,312 ft / +400 m
Elevation Loss: -2,953 ft / -900 m
Pack: Daypack
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

DAY 4 — HIKE THE ALTA VIA 1 BENEATH THE TOFANE

Today, the scale gets bigger.

After a short transfer from Cortina, begin hiking beneath the Tofane massif, with the huge southern face of Tofana di Rozes rising directly above the trail.

Join a section of the Alta Via 1, the long-distance hiking route that crosses the Dolomites from north to south. Instead of following it for days with an overnight pack, you'll experience one of its mountain sections carrying only what you need for the day.

Continue toward Rifugio Dibona at 2,045 m / 6,709 ft, where the terrace looks across the valley toward the Cinque Torri. It's a good perspective on just how much of this landscape you've already explored—you can look back toward mountains you were walking beneath two days earlier.

From the rifugio, descend through the forest toward Pocol before returning to Cortina. Depending on weather, trail conditions and the group, your guide may extend today's route.

Hiking: Approximately 5 hours
Distance: 6.5 mi / 10.5 km
Elevation Gain: +1,148 ft / +350 m
Elevation Loss: -2,067 ft / -630 m
Pack: Daypack
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

DAY 5 — HIKE THE TRE CIME DI LAVAREDO CIRCUIT

Today you'll hike one of the classic trails of the Italian Dolomites: the circuit around Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Drive past Lake Misurina and climb to Rifugio Auronzo at 2,320 m / 7,611 ft. You're already high in the mountains when you step onto the trail, so the views begin almost immediately.

Cross Forcella de Mezzo and continue around the Tre Cime. The three limestone towers change constantly as you move around them—broad rock walls from one direction gradually separate into three individual peaks as you approach their northern side.

Continue toward Rifugio Locatelli, where you'll look directly across at the sheer north faces of Tre Cime. It's the perspective that has made these three peaks one of the most recognizable mountain landscapes in Italy.

Rather than simply walking to the viewpoint and returning, continue around the massif to complete the circuit. Your guide will choose the best variation based on weather, trail conditions and crowds, combining the classic viewpoints with quieter stretches of trail where possible.

By the time you return to Rifugio Auronzo, you'll have experienced Tre Cime from nearly every angle.

Hiking: Approximately 4–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 6–7 mi / 9.7–11.3 km
Elevation Gain: Approximately +1,200 ft / +365 m
Elevation Loss: Approximately -1,200 ft / -365 m
Pack: Daypack
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Dinner

DAY 6 — HIKE TO LAKE SORAPIS

There's one more classic Dolomites hike ahead—and today's trail feels distinctly different from the previous four.

Begin at Passo Tre Croci and climb gradually through the forest toward the Sorapis massif. The trees begin to thin as you gain elevation, revealing increasingly open views across the surrounding mountains.

Closer to the lake, the trail becomes rockier and includes short exposed sections equipped with fixed cables, rails and stairs. No technical climbing is required, but you'll want to be comfortable hiking on mountain terrain and with some exposure.

Continue past Rifugio Vandelli and soon the turquoise water of Lake Sorapis appears beneath the towering limestone face of Monte Sorapis.

Fine glacial sediment suspended in the water gives the lake its distinctive pale-blue color. Take time for lunch near the lake before retracing the trail toward Passo Tre Croci.

Back in Cortina, trade hiking boots for dinner shoes and gather for a final meal together. After five days on the trail, you've walked beneath Cinque Torri and the Tofane, crossed sections of the Alta Via 1, circled Tre Cime and reached one of the Dolomites' best-known alpine lakes—all while sleeping in the same bed every night.

Hiking: Approximately 5–6 hours
Distance: 7.3 mi / 11.7 km
Elevation Gain: +1,830 ft / +558 m
Elevation Loss: -1,830 ft / -558 m
Pack: Daypack
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Cortina
Meals: Breakfast, Trail Lunch & Farewell Dinner

DAY 7 — CORTINA TO VENICE

Enjoy one last breakfast in Cortina before packing your bags and leaving the Dolomites behind.

Board your private group transfer for the journey south to Venice. The mountain valleys gradually open as you descend, with the limestone peaks you've spent the week exploring disappearing behind you.

The scheduled transfer arrives at Venice Marco Polo Airport between approximately 12:00 and 1:00 PM. Drop-off at the Cortina bus station or Venice train station may also be possible depending on your onward travel plans.

Transfer: Approximately 2–2.5 hours
Pack: Main luggage
Meals: Breakfast
