Alta Via 1 Self-Guided Hut-to-Hut Hiking Tour

Hike hut to hut through the heart of the Italian Dolomites, from the iconic peaks of Cortina to Mount Pelmo and the towering walls of Civetta.

7 Days / 6 Nights | Dolomites, Italy | Self-Guided | Intermediate | Mountain Huts & Hotel

Tour Description

Walk hut to hut through the Italian Dolomites on a self-guided section of the Alta Via 1, hiking from the mountains above Cortina d'Ampezzo south toward the Civetta massif.

Over the course of the trip, the landscape changes constantly. Hike beneath the Tofane peaks and among the rock towers of Cinque Torri, cross high mountain passes toward the turquoise waters of Lago Federa, follow alpine meadows beneath the enormous face of Mount Pelmo, and traverse beneath the towering walls of Civetta.

Each afternoon, the trail leads to a mountain rifugio, where you'll trade your hiking boots for dinner and a bed surrounded by the peaks you've spent the day walking through. Five nights are spent in mountain huts, with breakfast and dinner included—the classic Dolomites hut-to-hut experience without needing a guide or camping gear.

This is a self-guided Alta Via 1 hiking trip, giving you the freedom to hike at your own pace while accommodations and key logistics are arranged ahead of time. Detailed trip information and digital navigation help you stay on route, while optional luggage transfers let you hike most days with a lighter pack.

For hikers who want an independent trek without spending weeks piecing together hut reservations, route logistics and transportation, this itinerary offers a straightforward way to experience the Dolomites Alta Via 1.

Trip Highlights

  • Hike the Alta Via 1 through the Italian Dolomites, following the route south from the mountains above Cortina d'Ampezzo.
  • Walk among the towers of Cinque Torri, with route options beneath the Tofane and across the Lagazuoi and Nuvolau area.
  • Cross Passo Giau and Croda da Lago, descending toward Lago Federa beneath the surrounding limestone peaks.
  • Hike beneath Mount Pelmo, crossing open alpine meadows toward one of the Dolomites' most distinctive massifs.
  • Traverse beneath the Civetta, where a massive rock wall rises roughly 1,200 meters / 3,937 feet above portions of the trail.
  • Sleep in traditional Italian mountain rifugi, with breakfast and dinner included and optional luggage transfers available.

Is This Alta Via 1 Trip Right for You?

This trip is designed for active hikers comfortable spending several consecutive days on mountain trails. Most days involve 3–6 hours of hiking, with sustained climbs, rocky trails and long descents.

You don't need climbing or mountaineering experience, but you should arrive with good hiking fitness and be comfortable navigating independently in mountain terrain. Weather can change quickly, and June and September departures may encounter lingering snow or snowfields.

This is also a true hut-to-hut experience. Mountain rifugi are comfortable and full of character, but they aren't hotels. Depending on your accommodation option, you may sleep in dormitories or rooms, and bathrooms in the huts are shared.

A good fit if you want: independent hiking, big mountain landscapes, established trails, evenings in Italian rifugi and the logistics of a multi-day trek arranged for you.

Arrive in Pocol, a small mountain village just above Cortina d'Ampezzo, and settle into your hotel at the foot of the Dolomites. Pocol sits approximately 6 km / 3.7 miles from Cortina and is easily accessible by local bus.

If you arrive early, you can head toward Passo Falzarego for an optional afternoon hike on the Lagazuoi plateau. It's a good opportunity to stretch your legs and get your first look at the limestone peaks you'll spend the next several days walking through.

Optional Hiking: Up to 4 hours
Distance: Up to 7.5 mi / 12 km
Elevation Gain/Loss: Up to ±1,312 ft / ±400 m
Accommodation: 3-star hotel in Pocol
Meals: Dinner

Day 2 — Tofane to Cinque Torri

Your first full hiking day takes you into the mountains surrounding Tofane and Cinque Torri, with several route options that allow you to adjust the day based on your energy and conditions.

Start hiking directly from Pocol or take a short bus transfer to Passo Falzarego. Depending on the route you choose, you can hike beneath Tofane de Rozes, climb toward Lagazuoi at 2,778 m / 9,114 ft, or cross toward the Nuvolau summit at 2,575 m / 8,448 ft.

By afternoon, the freestanding limestone towers of Cinque Torri dominate the landscape. Your first night in the mountains is at Rifugio Scoiattoli, surrounded by the peaks you've spent the day exploring.

Hiking: 2–6 hours
Distance: 4.3–10.1 mi / 6.9–16.3 km
Elevation Gain: +984 to +3,773 ft / +300 to +1,150 m
Elevation Loss: -328 to -1,378 ft / -100 to -420 m

Day 3 — Cinque Torri to Croda da Lago

Leave the rock towers of Cinque Torri behind and continue south beneath Nuvolau. The trail climbs toward Forcella Ambrizola at 2,277 m / 7,470 ft, where the view opens across the forests and peaks surrounding Cortina d'Ampezzo.

From here, you have two route options. Take the higher route across the rugged Croda da Lago massif via Forcella Formin at 2,461 m / 8,074 ft, or descend more directly via Forcella Ambrizola toward Lago Federa, a turquoise alpine lake tucked beneath the surrounding peaks.

Tonight you'll stay at Rifugio Croda da Lago near Lago Federa. Even if you've selected luggage transportation, you'll carry the personal items you need for tonight's hut stay.

Hiking: 4.5–5.5 hours
Distance: 7.3–10 mi / 11.8–16.1 km
Elevation Gain: +1,509 to +2,625 ft / +460 to +800 m

Day 4 — Croda da Lago to Mount Pelmo & Col de Staulanza

Continue across a series of high alpine pastures, passing Forcella di Col Roan and Forcella Roan as Mount Pelmo and the Civetta massif begin to fill the horizon ahead.

The trail crosses the meadows surrounding Rifugio Città di Fiume before reaching the enormous scree slopes beneath Mount Pelmo. If you want to extend the day, an optional climb toward Monte Crot at 2,158 m / 7,080 ft provides a 360-degree view across the surrounding Dolomites.

Finish at Passo Staulanza, where you'll spend the night in the mountains.

Hiking: 3.5–5.5 hours

Today's route brings you beneath one of the largest rock walls of the trek. Climb toward Forcella Coldai at 2,191 m / 7,188 ft, passing the mountain hut and lake before beginning the traverse beneath Civetta.

For nearly 3 km / 1.9 miles, the trail follows a natural balcony beneath the Civetta wall, which rises approximately 1,200 m / 3,937 ft above you. Far below, the village of Alleghe and blue waters of Lake Alleghe sit roughly 1,000 vertical meters beneath the trail.

Continue beneath Civetta to Rifugio Vazzoler at 1,714 m / 5,623 ft, your home for the night.

Hiking: 5–5.5 hours
Distance: 9.4 mi / 15.2 km
Elevation Gain: +2,362 ft / +720 m
Elevation Loss: -2,526 ft / -770 m

Day 6 — Vazzoler Hut to Passo Duran

Leave Vazzoler and climb toward Palanzin Pass and Forcella dell'Orso, entering one of the more remote-feeling sections of the route.

The landscape becomes increasingly rugged beneath the Moiazza massif, where towers, pinnacles and enormous blocks of limestone surround the trail. At Forcella del Camp, 1,932 m / 6,339 ft, the route changes direction for the final traverse beneath Cima Duran.

Eventually, the roofs of the mountain huts at Passo Duran, 1,601 m / 5,253 ft, come into view. This is your final rifugio night on the Alta Via 1. If you've selected luggage transportation, your main luggage will be waiting here this evening.

Hiking: Approximately 5 hours
Distance: 7.2 mi / 11.6 km
Elevation Gain: +2,067 ft / +630 m
Elevation Loss: -2,461 ft / -750 m

Additional Trip Information

Alta Via 1 Trip at a Glance

This is a 7-day, 6-night self-guided hut-to-hut hiking trip in the Italian Dolomites. The itinerary begins in Pocol, near Cortina d'Ampezzo, and follows a section of the Alta Via 1 south through Cinque Torri, Croda da Lago, Mount Pelmo and the Civetta massif before finishing in Longarone.

How Difficult Is the Alta Via 1?

This itinerary is rated Intermediate (Level 3/5). Expect approximately 3–6 hours of hiking per day, generally with 500–1,000 m / 1,640–3,280 ft of elevation gain and 500–1,200 m / 1,640–3,937 ft of elevation loss.

The route follows a mixture of established mountain paths and trails and does not require technical climbing or mountaineering skills. However, hikers should be comfortable with sustained ascents, long descents, rocky mountain terrain and hiking on consecutive days.

Good hiking fitness and previous experience on mountain trails are recommended.

How Does the Self-Guided Trip Work?

This is an independent hiking trip rather than a guided group departure. Your accommodations and included trip logistics are arranged in advance, while you hike each day's route independently.

Before the trip, you'll receive a digital travel packet containing your trip information, accommodation details and applicable vouchers, along with access to a smartphone navigation app containing hiking routes and local maps.

There is no guide accompanying you and no formal orientation meeting at the starting hotel.

Luggage Transfers & What You'll Carry

Optional luggage transportation is available for travelers who prefer to hike with a lighter pack.

When luggage transfer is selected, your main luggage is transported between accommodations where vehicle access allows. You'll generally hike with a daypack containing water, layers, rain gear, food and other items needed during the day.

There are portions of the trek where luggage cannot reach the mountain huts, so you'll need to carry the clothing and personal items required for an overnight stay on those days.

If you choose to hike without luggage transportation, you'll carry your belongings throughout the trek. The recommended maximum pack weight is approximately 10 kg / 22 lb per person.

For luggage being transported, the supplier specifies one piece per person with a maximum weight of 15 kg / 33 lb.

Mountain Hut Accommodation

The trip includes six nights of accommodation:

1 night in a 3-star hotel in Pocol
5 nights in mountain rifugi along the hiking route

Mountain huts are part of the Alta Via 1 experience, but travelers should expect simpler accommodations than a traditional hotel. Depending on the selected accommodation option, you may sleep in a small dormitory or room. Bathrooms in the mountain huts are shared.

Space in the rifugi is limited, particularly during July and August, so early booking is recommended.

Meals on the Alta Via 1

Breakfast and dinner are included each day, for a total of six breakfasts and six dinners.

Lunches are not included. Depending on the day's route, you can often stop at mountain refuges or inns along the trail, purchase supplies for a picnic, or order a packed lunch from your accommodation.

Travelers with food allergies or dietary requirements should provide this information when booking so the accommodations can be notified in advance.

When Is the Best Time to Hike?

This Alta Via 1 itinerary operates from approximately mid-June through mid-September, subject to accommodation and trail availability.

July and August are the heart of the Dolomites hiking season and also the busiest months for mountain huts. June and September can have a higher chance of lingering snow and snowfields, so conditions may require additional preparation and equipment.

Mountain weather can change quickly at any point during the hiking season, so hikers should carry appropriate warm and waterproof layers.

Where Does the Trip Start?

The trip begins at your hotel in Pocol, Italy, approximately 6 km / 3.7 miles from Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Hotel check-in is available after 5:00 PM. Travelers arriving earlier can optionally explore the Passo Falzarego and Lagazuoi area before beginning the main trek the following morning.

Where Does the Trip End?

The final hike descends from Passo Duran to Dont. An included private taxi transfer then takes you from Dont to Longarone, where the trip ends on the afternoon of Day 7.

From Longarone, travelers can continue using public transportation toward Venice. An alternative transfer from Dont back to Cortina d'Ampezzo or Pocol can be arranged as an optional service.

Getting To and From the Dolomites

For international travelers, Venice is the most practical gateway identified in the trip documentation, particularly for onward travel after the trek.

Cortina d'Ampezzo can be reached from Venice by bus, with the supplier estimating approximately 2.5 hours for the Cortina–Venice journey. Local bus service connects Cortina d'Ampezzo and Pocol.

Because local bus schedules and frequencies can change seasonally and from year to year, transportation schedules should be reconfirmed before travel.

What Gear Do I Need?

Bring broken-in hiking footwear with good traction, waterproof rain gear, warm layers, sun protection and a comfortable hiking backpack. Trekking poles are strongly recommended for the sustained climbs and descents.

All travelers need a daypack. The trip documentation recommends approximately 30–45 liters, with enough room for water, food, rain gear, warm layers and overnight belongings when required. A minimum water capacity of approximately 2 liters is recommended.

Depending on snow conditions, hiking crampons may be necessary during June or September departures.

Alta Via 1 Weather & Itinerary Changes

The Dolomites are a mountain environment, and weather, trail conditions and accommodation availability can occasionally require changes to the planned route.

Trail closures, adverse weather or logistical issues may result in adjustments to the itinerary. Any changes are made with traveler safety and comfort in mind.
