Dolomites Grand Traverse: A 10-Day Self-Guided Hut-to-Hut Hike from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo

Cross the whole Dolomites on your own schedule, from the Rosengarten to the Tre Cime, sleeping in high mountain refuges.

Cross the entire Dolomites on foot, refuge to refuge, from Bolzano to Cortina d'Ampezzo. This 10-day self-guided traverse strings together the range's most famous landscapes into one unforgettable journey: the jagged needles of the Rosengarten, the rolling meadows of Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest alpine pasture, the wild plateaus of Puez and Fanes, the World War I tunnels of the Tofane, and a grand finale circling the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Each night you'll sleep high in the mountains in a staffed Dolomite refuge, where hearty dinners, cold beer and sunset over the peaks are part of the experience. Breakfast and dinner are included every day, and you can add luggage transfers so you hike most days with only a daypack.

You hike at your own pace with our hiking app, GPS tracks and a detailed digital travel pack, starting on any day that suits you between mid-June and mid-September. The trails are well marked and non-technical, with a few rocky sections and big passes to keep things exciting.

For hikers who want the full Dolomites experience, from first light on the Rosengarten to sunset on the Tre Cime, this is the trip.

Is This Dolomites Trek Right for You?

This trek suits strong walkers. Expect 5–7 hours on the trail on most days, with up to 3,740 ft of climbing, mostly on good trails with some rocky sections. There's no technical climbing.

Because it's self-guided, you need to be comfortable following the GPS app and a map. Most nights are in dorms or shared rooms in mountain refuges, so bring a sleeping bag liner and a travel towel. On three nights, you'll carry a small overnight pack, even with the luggage option.

In June and September, snow can linger on the high passes. Refuges fill fast, so book early.

A good fit if you want: a true coast-to-coast style traverse of the Dolomites, nights in classic mountain refuges, and the freedom to hike on your own schedule.
