  • Accommodation: Explorer Cabins in West Yellowstone, Montana (or Similar)

Day 2: Yellowstone National Park - Hike or Kayak

Choose Your Adventure Day:

Custom Hiking/Tour Activity: The oldest park in the US National Park system, Yellowstone is famous for its wildlife and geothermal features. Accompanied by a private guide who will tailor the route to your desired activity level, choose to explore the park today on a more strenuous morning hike followed by an afternoon of sightseeing or a full day of sightseeing and light hiking. Stops today may include the geyser basins, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and expansive Yellowstone Lake. Along the way, keep an eye out for wildlife- Hayden Valley is one of the best places to see wildlife in the park. After a full day, return to the hotel in the early evening.

Kayak Activity: After an introduction to the history and geology of Yellowstone Lake, along with instruction on kayaking equipment and techniques, your guide will lead you around the shoreline to the West Thumb Geyser Basin where there are many geothermal features on land and under water we will explore from our kayaks. Many of these geothermal features on the lake are not accessible by any other means. We continue on to the remote Potts geyser basin exploring this primitive geyser basin where there are no signs, no boardwalks and most importantly no other people. We stop at a secluded beach for a picnic lunch which we provide, then we return the same way we came, following the shoreline and watching the wildlife as we casually make our way back to Grant Village, and to our vehicles around 2 or 3 in the afternoon.

Ages 12 and under are required to be in a tandem kayak with an adult, and we take kids as young as 5 regularly. Day paddles meet at the marina in Grant Village, on the western edge of Yellowstone Lake at 9:00AM (after September 12 we start at 10am). We have both single and double kayaks available for everyone to enjoy, and absolutely no prior kayaking experience is required.

The nearby Jackson Lake Lodge is also a great spot for lunch, featuring 60-foot windows offering some of the best views of the Teton Mountain Range. Continue on to the hotel and check in for the evening. Try to turn in early tonight, in preparation for tomorrow's early start.
