How difficult is the walking?
The tour is rated moderate. Most days involve 3–4 hours of walking with about 1,000–1,300 feet of climbing. The hardest day, in Triglav National Park, is steeper and longer, at 5–6 hours with about 2,300 feet of climbing, and you can shorten it by stopping at the mountain hut.
How fit do I need to be?
You should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking several hours on consecutive days. It's not a strenuous trek, but it's more than a stroll. Regular walkers and casual hikers will enjoy it.
What are the trails like?
Trails range from wide, even paths to rocky trails with occasional short, steep or slippery sections, both uphill and downhill. Much of the walking is shaded by forest, but some stretches are exposed to the sun. Hiking shoes with good grip are essential.
How big are the groups?
Groups are capped at 8 travelers, with one local guide who also drives the group in a private van.
Are departures guaranteed?
Yes. Scheduled group departures are confirmed at a fixed price, with no minimum number of travelers required.
When does the tour run?
Scheduled group departures run from May to September. Private departures for your own group are available any time from April to October.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
May, June and September offer the most pleasant walking temperatures and fewer crowds at popular spots like Lake Bled. July and August are hot, typically 75–90°F, and heatwaves can push temperatures above 95°F. October brings beautiful fall colors but shorter, cooler days.
Can I book this tour as a private trip?
Yes. Private departures are available from April to October for your own group, and hotels can be tailored to your preferences.
Where do I stay?
You stay in centrally located 3-star and 4-star hotels with en-suite bathrooms: two nights in Ljubljana, two at Lake Bled, two in Bovec in the Soča Valley, and one in Piran on the Adriatic coast.
Does the tour visit Lake Bled?
Yes. Day 3 includes a walk around Lake Bohinj and a walk to Lake Bled's best viewpoint over the island church and castle.
Can I swim on this tour?
Yes. There are chances to swim in Lake Bohinj, Lake Bled, the Soča River and the Adriatic Sea, so bring a swimsuit and a quick-dry towel.
Are dinners included?
No. Dinners and drinks are on your own, which gives you free evenings to try local restaurants in Ljubljana, Bled, Bovec and Piran.
Can I join this tour as a solo traveler?
Yes. You can book a single room for a $686 supplement. If you'd rather share, we'll try to match you with a traveler of the same gender in a twin room. If no roommate is available, the single room supplement is required.
How do I get to the start and back to the airport?
The tour starts in Ljubljana and ends in Piran. Shared and private airport shuttles connect both towns with Ljubljana, Venice and Trieste airports, and we can help arrange your transfers if needed. Airport transfers are not included in the tour price.
Should I add extra nights?
We recommend arriving in Ljubljana a day early to explore the city and start the tour rested. An extra night in Piran at the end is also a great way to relax and enjoy more of the coast.
Can I do adventure activities?
Yes. On Day 6 in the Soča Valley, you can add rafting, canyoning, paragliding or zip-lining at an extra cost, or keep walking along the river.
What should I bring?
Bring hiking shoes with good grip, quick-dry hiking pants and shorts, a fleece and another warm layer, a light rain and wind jacket, a warm hat and gloves, sun protection, a swimsuit and quick-dry towel, a small daypack and a reusable water bottle. Tap water is safe to drink throughout Slovenia. Bring trekking poles if you normally use them, plus some cash, since many small shops and restaurants only accept cash.
Is travel insurance required?
Travel insurance isn't included, but we strongly recommend coverage for trip cancellation and medical emergencies.
