The trail is alYour adventure begins around 8:00 AM, when your FlashpackerConnect guide picks you up in a private vehicle for a scenic 3-hour drive through the Sacred Valley and into the high Andes. We ascend to the spectacular Malaga Pass, where snow-capped peaks and glacier-covered mountains frame the start of your first adventure.

From here, gear up for an unforgettable mountain bike descent. Over the next 3–4 hours, you’ll ride approximately 28 miles downhill, losing 4,592 feet in elevation. The route follows a wide dirt road that is accessible for most ability levels, making it both thrilling and manageable. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional Andean villages, rushing rivers, llama and alpaca farms, and dramatic mountain scenery as the landscape gradually transitions toward the cloud forest.

We pause for a well-earned lunch in the small town of Huamanmarca, where you can relax and refuel before the afternoon’s adrenaline rush.

Next, we head to the Urubamba River for an exciting white water rafting experience. Depending on the season, you’ll encounter Class II–IV rapids during this 2–3 hour journey. Even if you’re new to rafting, you’ll be in excellent hands with a professional river team providing safety equipment and expert instruction throughout.

After reaching the take-out point, a short transfer brings us to our hotel in Santa Maria, where you can unwind and reflect on an action-packed first day.

Day 2: SANTA MARIA-SANTA TERESA: Inca Trails, Jungle Ziplining & Hot Springs

After a hearty breakfast, we set out on foot for a rewarding day of hiking along a preserved section of the ancient Inca Trail network. Today’s trek covers approximately 10 miles (12 km) and takes 6–7 hours, blending history, culture, and lush jungle landscapes.

As we ascend and descend through the cloud forest, you’ll pass through small farming communities where locals cultivate coca leaves, coffee beans, bananas, and tropical fruits. The trail offers sweeping valley views and a tangible connection to the paths once used by the Incas centuries ago. With 3,280 feet of elevation gain and 3,658 feet of descent, today is active but incredibly rewarding.

We pause for lunch near Vilcabamba, a region rich in Inca history and surrounded by vibrant jungle scenery.

In the afternoon, adventure shifts from trekking boots to harnesses as we arrive at a jungle canopy course featuring seven thrilling zip lines. Soar above the forest floor and take in a bird’s-eye view of the dense greenery below — an exhilarating contrast to the morning’s cultural hike.

By late afternoon, we arrive in the laid-back town of Santa Teresa, famous for its natural thermal hot springs. Fed by mineral-rich waters heated deep within the surrounding mountains, these soothing pools offer the perfect way to relax tired legs and recover after a full day of adventure.

As we climb toward the pass, anticipation builds. From this vantage point, you’ll be rewarded with your first distant views of Machu Picchu, dramatically perched among the surrounding peaks — a preview of the wonder awaiting tomorrow.

From Llactapata, we descend through lush cloud forest alive with orchids, butterflies, and rare Andean bird species. Along the way, we pass lesser-visited Incan ruins, offering a quieter and more intimate glimpse into the region’s ancient history.

Reaching the banks of the Urubamba River, we transition from trekking boots to rail seats as we board a scenic local train bound for Aguas Calientes, the charming town nestled at the base of Machu Picchu.

Upon arrival, we check into our comfortable hotel (La Cabaña or similar). The afternoon and evening are yours to relax, explore the town’s artisan shops, stroll along the river, or simply soak in the excitement of being on the doorstep of one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites.
